Paardevlei Specialist Medical Centre – Construction Under Way

 (Cape Town, March 2014)

Cranes dot the sky along the R44 approaching Strand, as the construction of two new medical facilities proceeds in full swing in the Heartlands De Beers Precinct in Somerset West. The larger of the two is a fully-fledged acute hospital, which is being developed by Busamed, an NEF public-funded company. The smaller of the two construction sites is the new home of the Paardevlei Specialist Medical Centre, a prestigious private Day Hospital and Ophthalmic Clinic set to open its doors to the public in September 2014.

The Paardevlei Specialist Medical Centre is the product of a small group of specialists who envisaged a medical facility that would be owned and managed by the doctors who operate in it, and that would rival the best in the world in terms of patient care, affordability, patient, doctor and staff comfort, technology and prestige.

To realise their dream, the group which originally comprised of 5 Ophthalmologists and an Anaesthetist, and now includes Ear, Nose and Throat, as well as Maxilla-Facial specialists, partnered with Cure Day Clinics, one of the best in terms of expertise and experience in the operation of Day Hospital facilities, to form CDC Somerset West.

This partnership will be in charge of the day-to-day operation and management of the Day Hospital, and has as its goal the provision of more affordable and efficient, and therefore more accessible, private healthcare. Cure Day Clinics have already opened, and are currently operating, successful Day Hospitals in Erasmuskloof, Medkin, Midstream and most recently, Paarl.

Furthermore, the original group of medical specialists teamed up with local property heavyweights, including Lazercor Developments, to form CJM Investments (Pty) Ltd, a private development company tasked with initiating and overseeing the design, development and construction of the Medical Centre.

An approximately 600m2 dedicated Ophthalmic Clinic will also be established in the Centre, where 5 local ophthalmologists will be able to share specialized facilities and equipment between their individual practices in order to provide better, more efficient and more affordable quality care to both new and existing patients.

Additional sectional title purchasers in the Medical Centre scheme include a Radiology Unit and Pathology Lab, and the developers are currently in negotiations with a small exclusive Dialysis Centre. The Paardevlei Specialist Medical Centre welcomes all surgical disciplines that are suited to Day Hospitals, including gynaecology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, urology, dermatology, ophthalmology, laparo-, arthro- and hysteroscopies, certain orthopaedic procedures and dental and general surgery. The Centre is also open to investor-purchasers and suitable tenants.

 Development Summary:

·         Approx. 80% of GLA has been sold.

·         Approx. 20% of GLA is still available for rent or purchase.

·         Additional storage space is available for purchase.

·         The Centre will be ready to open its doors to the public in September 2014.
